Japanese artist Makoto Nakamura creates tessellation patterns.  After majoring in graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan, he became increasingly interested in tessellation design thanks to M.C. Escher.  His tiled pattern below, titled Marathon 1, shows a series of runners jogging left and the right with no gaps or overlaps.
