Forced Perspective

At first glance, it looks like a giant, a normal-sized man and a very small man are standing in the same room together. This type of illusion is called an Ames Room and uses a fixed viewing perspective to fool you.

In reality, the right corner of the room is much closer to the viewer than the left corner is. This gives the impression that the person on the right side must be significantly larger than the person on the left side.

A tessellation is an image that repeats the same shapes over and over again to cover a plane with no overlap or gaps. This type of pattern was frequently employed by M.C. Escher who was fascinated by the symmetry involved in these designs. In 1993, Dr. Robert Fathauer created the following pattern that features points of both two-fold and four-fold symmetry. Can you find them?

What exactly are you looking at in this deceptive photo? Is it a family of tiny horses or are the table and chairs gigantic?

The horses are, of course, normal size. It is an over-sized table and chairs that create confusion when viewing this scene from a distance. The subject hidden in the cowboy optical illusion would surely find this image to be interesting. If you have any racing questions, please feel free to let us know in the comments.

A man’s face is hiding somewhere in this scene from an advertising puzzle card from 1880. Can you find it?

The man’s face becomes easier to see when the image is rotated counterclockwise by ninety degrees. The face is located on the body of the horse.

Impossible

Impossible triangles, also known as Penrose triangles, have been featured on this site in the past. The truth is, no optical illusion website would be complete without them since they represent a classic illusion that most people instantly recognize and appreciate. Today’s illusion is a painting by artist Monika Buch featuring three impossible triangles that happen to be interlocked.

Upside Down

From 1903 to 1905, the New York Herald ran a series of original comic strips called The Upside Downs of Little Lady Lovekins and Old Man Muffaroo. This comic strip, created by cartoonist and illustrator Gustave Verbeek, consisted of a total of 6 drawn panels. After reading the 6 panels right-side-up, the entire comic could be turned upside down to reveal an additional 6 panels that continued the story (bringing each comic to a total of 12 panels). That Gustave Verbeek completed a total of 64 such upside down comic strips over a two year time period is a testament to his creativity and resourcefulness.
Perhaps the most famous image from The Upside Downs of Little Lady Lovekins and Old Man Muffaroo is one that shows Old Man Muffaroo in a canoe being attacked by a fish.
