Marathon Tessellation by Makoto Nakamura

Tessellation 11 February 2013 2 Comments

Japanese artist Makoto Nakamura creates tessellation patterns.  After majoring in graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan, he became increasingly interested in tessellation design thanks to M.C. Escher.  His tiled pattern below, titled Marathon 1, shows a series of runners jogging left and the right with no gaps or overlaps.

Up-Down by David Macdonald

Impossible 8 February 2013 No Comments Yet - Share Your Thoughts

Artisan David Macdonald created the following photo montage using pictures taken of the courtyard of his loft in Brussels, Belgium.  The entire scene is a little uneasy because it is hard to get a proper sense of direction.  The windows do not seem to line up properly.  Are you looking up at this scene or down at it?

Many other artists have incorporated this type of effect into their illusion images.  You might recall Corner House by Istvan Orosz and Impossible (and Crazy) Tennis by photographer Michael Kai.  Be sure to visit Cambiguities to see more works created by David Macdonald.

Anaconda Bus Optical Illusion

Trompe L'oeil 6 February 2013 2 Comments

You have no doubt seen cars and buses with advertising painted on them before.  But this advertisement for a local zoo on the side of a public transit bus goes above and beyond.  It is really well done and almost looks like something out of a bad horror movie.  Despite the fact that the anaconda is one of the largest snakes in the world, it would be hard to believe that one could grow to the size required to crush this bus.

Hidden Camel Optical Illusion

Hidden Objects 4 February 2013 1 Comment

A camel is hiding in this tranquil poolside scene.  Can you find it?

Hidden Camel

I am not sure exactly where this image is from.  It looks like it was maybe some sort of advertisement for a product.  If anyone has any information on this, please let us know in the comments.

Move 25 by Daniel Picon

Motion 1 February 2013 No Comments Yet - Share Your Thoughts

Today’s illusion is a variation of the Ouchi Illusion where the center circle appears to be unstable and float above the checkered background image.  This was created by French artist Daniel Picon.

White Fluffy Tree

Forced Perspective 30 January 2013 No Comments Yet - Share Your Thoughts

A photographer gives a dead tree new life by capturing the photograph at exactly the right angle.  In all reality, you probably could not plan this picture any better than it actually turned out.

The Phenomenon of Floating by Rob Gonsalves

Ambiguous 28 January 2013 No Comments Yet - Share Your Thoughts

I love the work of Rob Gonsalves.  Each of his paintings presents a subtle yet magical transformation.  When the viewer finally realizes what is going on, he (or she) cannot help but be impressed.  His painting below, titled “The Phenomenon of Floating” presents a woman floating on her back and looking at the heavens in a secluded lake surrounded by trees.  At the same time, it also appears that she could be floating in space and looking up at Earth.  Such transformations are a trademark of all of Rob Gonsalves’ works.
